P25RX Nano setup Empty P25RX Nano setup

Mon Dec 11, 2023 6:43 pm
I just received a Nano unit recently and got around to setting it up tonight. I'm having a hard time setting it up based on what I'm reading in the user manual, and I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. I'm on the newest firmware from 11/27, and I can't get the unit to receive any audio.

The furthest I've gotten is to manually add a P25 system, enter a control channel, which it does seem to be detecting because it displays the appropriate RFSS, NAC, and site numbers. When I enter monitor mode from there, I see the blue graph moving, which I take to indicate it's receiving data from the control channel (although that's not covered anywhere in the manual). I still don't get any audio and it just sits on this control channel doing nothing. Mute is not active, the signal strength is fine, my headphones are fine, I can hear the "keep speaker awake" noise through them. I'm not seeing any talkgroups come through or anything else in monitor mode. I'm trying to monitor a Motorola P25 phase 1 system if that matters in this context.

I've also tried to set up the systems by zip code, when I do that it goes through 30-50 (estimating) frequencies, it takes several minutes. I suspect this is failing somewhere, because I never see message that this process is complete. It seems to hang on one frequency for an abnormally long time, then it pops over into monitor mode and sits on that same frequency, again not scanning anything, no audio. I've tried this 3 times, it stops and sits on a different frequency each time. Any idea what I should do or start troubleshooting?

This is just a guess. I have not seen this myself. If you have a valid control channel and the correct WACN system info displaying. The traffic channels are disabled if the radio is in "LEARN".
Try going to the CONFIG MODE menu. The left button toggles Learn On/Off. Try to Toggle the left button to show Learn off.

No luck there either. Toggled Learn mode on and off just to be safe, it's still doing the same thing. I'll try to upload a video of what it's doing a little later.

I would try "Reset to Default" in the FLASH CONFIG menu. That could wipe out any bad config setting. After a reset, I would add a known active Control Channel as described in the Add a channel quick start guide at this link.

In the configuration, did it add any [IDEN] sections during the learn mode?  There could be up to 16 IDEN sections. Here is an example for index 0.

[IDEN]
IDEN_IDX=0
BASE_FREQ=851006250
BW=12500
SPACING=6250
TDMA_CH=0
[END]

I uploaded a video of what it does during zip code search, but apparently I can't post links to this forum since I'm a new user. You'll have to replace the (dot) in this URL and paste it into your browser:
https://vimeo(dot)com/893750469

Afterwards, this is what it has written to the backup under IDEN, just these two records:

[IDEN]
IDEN_IDX=0
BASE_FREQ=851006250
BW=12500
SPACING=6250
TDMA_CH=0
[END]

[IDEN]
IDEN_IDX=2
BASE_FREQ=851012500
BW=12500
SPACING=12500
TDMA_CH=2
[END]

P25RX Nano setup Empty Re: P25RX Nano setup

Tue Dec 12, 2023 11:22 am
Thanks for the video. I have never used the zip code search on my units. Sorry, I have no insight into how the zip code search works.

I have three units - a Micro and 2 Nanos. All three were setup using the method described in the quick start guide noted above.

Based on my past config setups, it appears to me that perhaps not enough time is allowed to gather all the system info. Some systems may differ on how often they broadcast info on a control channel.

I would  reset to defaults to remove the zip code sites.

See EDIT2 Below
Then add a known active control channel frequency again (quick start guide). When the unit is in LEARN you should see it collecting info on the display. It should say "adding" and then the info.

You may have to start the Learn again, if it does not get all the info the first time. That is just going into the CONFIG menu and turning Learn on and waiting 1 or 2 mins to gather more info. After the 1-2 mins, set Learn off. Then hold the middle button down for more than 3 secs to save config.

If that process does not workout, Todd will likely ask you to email him your ini file after you do a backup onto your SD Card. Todd is usually around this forum mornings and evenings his time on the west coast.

In the meantime, I am going to reset one of my units and run the learn process to see how it goes on my four P25 systems. Sorry. I do not have a lot ways to help. Just a customer giving my best suggestions to help get you running.

EDIT: Regarding the [IDEN] section. That section is required for voice grants to occur.

UPDATE ON LEARN

EDIT2: I am finding that I needed to run Learn twice to gather all the info on my systems to hear the voice grants.
The first time run, I got a message of incomplete configuration. I had to reboot and run Learn a second time.

I will email my observations to Todd.

You may want to wait for Todd to look into this issue, as this may need a new FW update to give the learn more time.

Appreciate the response. I'm assuming based on what it's doing with the zip codes that it either hits some time limitation or something else is causing the process to end prematurely.

I'll try reseting to defaults and use the learn process when I get home tonight to see if anything changes.

This might be a work around until Todd can investigate and perhaps fix quickly.

Adding the active control channel freq will turn on the first learn for 30 secs.
When it turns the first learn off, do a power cycle of the Nano.
Your just entered control channel should appear after power up.
If still no voice, then go to config menu and run learn again. It will run for 30 sec.
That worked on 3 systems for me. Hard to know if my work around will work for your local systems.

This did work exactly as you described. I reset the config, manually entered the CC; putting it into learn mode twice was the trick. After restarting and putting it into Learn the second time, I started seeing more information get pulled in. Once the second learn cycle was over, I started getting audio.

I'd still like to get the zip code part figured out though, so I don't have to add other sites in by hand.

Thanks. I will work on making the timeout for the learn mode longer by default and also user-programmable. I'll see if I can figure out the issue with zip code search.

Please give the 1213-01 firmware a try. I'm testing to see if it fixes the rssi display issue. This version also has a change related to the SKIP TG function. I will attempt to fix the zip-search and related issue as soon as a I get caught up on the hw.

I am trying to recreate the issue. I have not seen it occur.  A few questions on your setup: Do you have a ROAM mode enabled? When the RSSI locks up, does the Wio still display all other info? Do the Wio buttons/joystick still function? Are you using the EagleMon program?

Thank you. Knowing that both the Wio and the EagleMon are showing the same is very good info for troubleshooting. It helps rule out some things.

Thanks. I had the same issue happen here. It may take a while to figure out what is causing this one since it takes so long to get it to happen. I have another version ready to test. 1216-01.

Where are you guys posting this new firmware for download? I'm checking all over the website but I don't see a link for the nano.

Also, do you plan on sharing the code on github like you did with some of your other products? I see eaglemon in your repositories, but nothing else for the Nano.

The only difference between 1216-01 and 1217-01 is that the receiver starts in 'Nano' mode on power-up instead of 'Eagle HH' mode. This gets rid of the need for the fw to determine which hardware it is running on. I'm going to add a configuration option for this in a future release.
