Talkgroup DSD downloads from RR Empty Talkgroup DSD downloads from RR

Fri Jun 30, 2023 11:13 am
I just got my new P25RX-II hooked up last night and the learning begins....  First thing I did was put my zipcode in to do a database search.  Unfortunately the P25 systems in my area of Iowa , SARA (Shared Area Radio Agreement) and ISICS (Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System) were not listed.  I went to RR and downloaded the CSV file for talkgroups as described in the Tips and Tricks section of the website.  Everything imported just fine but it doesn't sync with the "Display View" tab whan a talkgroup appears.  It just says "unknown".  Looking at the TG Editor, it shows the Sysid different than what it actually is.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also... is this able to monitor more that one P25 system at a time?

Thanks!

Sounds like RR may have the wrong sysid in the DSD files for your system. The DSD files are really CSV files. You can import them into a spreadsheet or text editor and fix the sysid, then re-import with the TG editor. The SYS_ID and WACN must match the actual system for the talk groups to work.

Yes, you can monitor multiple systems. To do this, enter the control channel frequencies you would like to monitor in the "Search DB" tab, highlight the rows, and press the "Add Selected Frequencies To Roaming Flash" button. Once this is done, you can enable roaming on the P25RXConfig tab and set the timeout to 1 or 2 seconds. This will cause the receiver to scan all of the control channels defined in the roaming flash.  If you wish to monitor a single system, but you would like to have it automatically switch to a backup / alternate control channel if the system rotates, then you can do the same thing, but make the timeout much higher like 9999 seconds of no voice activity. The receiver will start to scan after losing signal for more than 10 seconds regardless of the voice timeout setting.

Below is a copy paste from the file downloaded from RR. I don't even see where sysid is. It should be 52h which is 82d. The only 82 is see is part of the Alpha Tag. I'm not home right now to verify but remember it being reported as 034 in the TG editor. If you took 52d and converted it to hex it would be 34h which is interesting.

Decimal,Hex,Alpha Tag,Mode,Description,Tag,Category
18213,4725,"82 EVENT 1",T,"Sheriff Event 1",Law Talk,"Scott County"
18214,4726,"82 EVENT 2",T,"Sheriff Event 2",Law Talk,"Scott County"
18215,4727,"82 EVENT 3",T,"Sheriff Event 3",Law Talk,"Scott County"

That doesn't look like a DSD talk group file format. Here is a sample DSD group file:  Note the lines start with P25,WACN.SYSID

My bad.  I'm not at home and posted the wrong file.  Here's the actual one.  Like I said, the sysid should be 52h, so if the column showing 034 is supposed to be the sysid, it's like RR converted 52h to hex again which made it 34h.  Hope that makes sense...

I understand what you are saying about decimal /hex, but I think there are actually multiple sites on that system with those sys_id hex values. There is both a 0x34 and 0x52.

0x34 sysid = Johnson Co Simulcast  (site 0x14)
0x52 sysid has 4 different sites,  Quad cities, Scott Co, Port Byron, and Illinois City Sites:  (0x14, 0x1e, 0x3c, 0x3d). Note that I'm using the 0x prefix to indicate hex.

FWIW, the SARA network listing on RR shows multiple SYSIDs for WACN 45564.

There is a 034 and 052 in their listing. Perhaps there is a 45564.052 file that could be downloaded?

edit: Sorry Todd , I just saw you posted the same info

Thanks. I could do that tonight. It seems there's only one link for the SARA system regardless of county. I could do a mass replace in Notepad++ and try it. If that doesn't work I'll send it to you. Thanks again for your help.

So after editing the file with Notepad++, the file imported just fine and was working as expected. Everytime I disable some talkgroups and try to write to memory the device locks up though. It had done this a few times even before I imported the file. I have to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in.

There are some challenges in the software to get it working on Windows, Mac, and Linux simultaneously. To address variations on the various platforms / OS versions, a user-adjustment for "USB Inteface Speed" was added to the Advanced tab in the software. Can you please try adjusting the speed to one of the other two options and see if that helps with the lockup when writing the talk groups?

Will give that a try. I didn't realize you had a Linux version. I use Linux Mint most of the time. I found your instructions to compile from source but the link to Netbeans 8.1 doesn't work. Apparently you can't download pre-Apache versions anymore.

You can use the same "exe" file on Linux if you have java installed. I use Oracle version 8 on Linux.  To start on Linux, 'java -jar BTCFG-II.exe'

So I installed Oracle Java jre1.8.0_371 and made it default. Executing java -jar BTConfig-2023-05-12_2124.exe brings up the gui but doesn't connect. cli just repeats these lines:

[0] found device on : ttyS0 Physical Port S0 Physical Port S0 Physical Port S0 closed
[1] found device on : ttyACM0 BlueTail-P25RX-II BlueTail-P25RX-II BlueTail-P25RX-II closed

After closing the gui, there are several messages such as this:

No difference. I downloaded the Advanced version and it connects immediately but that looks like a whole other learning curve

Looks like ttyACM0 shows the device there, but something else has opened the serial port. This is almost certainly some type of "modem manager".

On debian-type systems, you can run 'sudo apt-get remove modemmanager’.

That didn't work either. The ADV_BTCFG-II-2023-06-11_0833.exe is working in Linux just fine even without sudo. I created a system for our "SARA" system in Iowa. It is receiving just fine but the talkgroups don't come through unless I have "allow unknown talkgroups" checked. If I so much as edit an alpha tag on one that was auto-populated, then turn off "allow unknown talkgroups", no talkgroups will come through anymore.

Sorry to jump in again. I have seen this happen when my TGs were not enabled.
In the TG Editor, is the 'Enabled' checked on your known TGs?

On the advanced version, the talk groups are stored in a database file on the PC. After you edit them, you need to transfer the database to the receiver flash with the "Write TG To Dev" button.

Brilliant! That did it. Seems very stable in Linux compared to Windows 10 on my machine anyway. Haven't had one lockup yet.
